Although a lot of people look forward to the Christmas season, there are some people who are hindered from enjoying the jolly occasion because of heavy emotional baggages that they need to let go of. These people dread the holidays because the joy felt by other people emphasizes their unhappiness. If you are feeling blah during the holidays, here are some questions that can help you say goodbye to the winter blues.
What are you feeling?
The first thing that you should do to beat holiday depression is to acknowlege and accept what you are feeling. It's good to that you are trying to shut out by pretending that it isn't there. But, you could only do that successfully if you are in a gathering, outside your house or surrounded by people that can distract you from what you are feeling. What do you plan to do when you are alone in your house or when you find yourself unable to sleep at night? Acknowledging your feelings and finding the cause of it is much more productive than indulging in bottles of alcohol and packs of cigarettes. It's much more healthier too!
Why are you feeling this way?
Now that you've accepted your feelings, you can start figuring out what is causing them. Holiday depression is usually caused by relationship problems, illnesses and poor financial situation. People who have recently lost a love one or are far away from their loved ones tend to feel depressed during Christmas. People who have a serious illness during the holiday season tend to be consumed by their worries. Those who feel that they cannot afford to celebrate Christmas or give gifts to their loved ones because of their lack of finances can have a feeling of inadequacy that can lead to depression.
Who can help you?
Now that you have acknowledged your feelings, you can now find some people who can help you. Besides actively organizing get-togethers and finding activities that you can do, find people that can help you sort out what you are feeling, help you find the cause of your depression as well as the solution for it. Perhaps you can go to a close friend or family member. You can also call a hotline that deals with people who are feeling depressed during the Christmas season. You might also want to join a group. This way, you can be around people who can empathize with you and help you face your depression constructively.
What are the things that you can't change?
You have to accept the fact that there are just some things that you can't change no matter how much you worry or sulk about it. Start identifying them and work around them. If you are going through a break up during the holidays, maybe you can start thinking about the upsides of being single again. And, make sure that the activities that you get into will emphasize that.
What are things that you can change?
We all have this idea of what would make us happy. Now that we know the things that we can't change, let's veer away from wall that we cannot move and focus our attention on the doors that we can open. What can we change in our present situation? List them down and find aways to achieve them. With that list and action plan, you will find yourself with a new hope for the future, putting a little bit of optimism into your depressing holiday.

Yes indeed, it is ahrd to accept the things you can't change, we live in a world where the media tells you you can achieve anything!! We all get set backs, and when they come i think the thing to do is stop, take a step back and try and see any positive thing in the situation, however small it may be.
Take care.
